Chapter 11

The shot never came, but the tense feeling in her shoulders didn’t dissolve until she was some distance away.

She heard cries behind her at first. She cast two spells as she ran. The first, and the easiest, was to prevent all sounds escaping a narrow buffer zone around her. The second, and this took more energy and time, was to lay a thick fog all around the area.

She stretched her abilities to their outmost with that second spell. She pushed her powers, what little was left of them, to their furthest limit, and when the incantation had been said, and the thick fog had descended, she had no choice but to sit down and rest, with her head in her hands.

She guessed she had covered close to three square furlongs with the fog, possibly a little more. It was enough to keep her safe. She rested for a little while before continuing.

It was difficult to get her bearings. She had remembered the general direction where she had seen the spire of the boys’ school, but that was before she had sat down, and in the thick fog and with the tiredness that made it difficult for her to move, she struggled to work out which way that was. After a few moments’ hesitation, she chose a direction. She was not sure that the direction she chose was correct, and doubt gnawed at her every step.

To motivate herself to move faster, she reminded herself how important it was for her to reach the boys’ school.

Once she was able to find the power source, she would open it with the key that uncle Alfred had given her. He had also taught her two spells. One was a spell that she had to recite as she turned the key in the power source box. The spell was complex. She had memorized it, but the passage of time meant that some of the words eluded her now. She also had written the spell down in her notebook, and she had been meaning to revise it, but had never gotten around to it. The second spell, she was to recite after the she had opened that box. That spell was simpler. It also was in the notebook, and now that notebook was back in her room at the school. Nonetheless, she was almost sure that she could remember the spells correctly when the time came.

What would happen after she had recited the spells she didn’t know. Uncle Alfred hadn’t explained that far. Perhaps, she thought, he didn’t believe that she would be ever able to reach the power source. Or maybe, what followed was not for her to know. Either way, she didn’t believe that thinking about the matter any more was worthwhile. Uncle Alfred had his reasons, and she trusted him.

Of course, it was only after he had given her the key and taught her the spells that she had learned that he was a master spell thief. Would she have asked him more questions if she had known? Emmeline wasn’t sure.
